Lake Monticello Rules and Regulations

Lakeshore Family Campground has included the following summary to ensure guests understand the rules and limitations for Lake Monticello.  Not all shown below will apply to guests but all have been summarized from Dominion Energy's Lake Monticello Shoreline Management Plan. Please see full document at link provided for more information.

Boating Laws

  • The boating laws of South Carolina are enforced by the SCDNR

What is Lake Monticello?

  • The Monticello Reservoir is a pumped storage project for V.C. Summer Nuclear Station.

    • Water levels can fluctuate vertically up to 4.5 to 5 feet over a 10 to 12 hour period during generation phases. The fluctuation of the reservoir can, at times, limit or restrict the use of most docks on the Monticello shoreline. This rapid fluctuation makes it especially important for boaters and other lake recreators to assume a high degree of personal responsibility for their own safety by being especially aware and cautious.

  • The Nuclear Regulatory commission requires a one-mile radius exclusion zone surrounding the Summer Station. This area, encompassing approximately 7.2 miles of shoreline, is designated by warning signs on the landward side and by buoys on the lakeward side. Admittance to this area is restricted in order to comply with the licensing requirements for the V. C. Summer Nuclear Station.

  • There is a buffer zone, also known as the "blue line", between the back of the property and the lake, that is owned and managed by Dominion Energy to retain the natural aesthetic, erosion control, and wildlife habitat of the lake.

    • At Lakeshore Family Campground this area includes all land and trees between back wire fence and the lake.

    • No clearing or removal of trees or vegetative cover within the buffer zone will be permitted. The trees, bushes, and other vegetation growing on and above the 425 contour play an important role in protecting the environmental, scenic, and recreational values of the reservoir.

    • Note: this means this area is not owned by Lakeshore Family Campground and any modifications or management of the area was not allowed by Dominion Energy. Take precautions for steeper slope to access the dock and lake.
